India celebrates Rashtriya Ekta Diwas or National Unity Day every year on October 31 to commemorate the birth anniversary of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, one of the founding architects of modern India. Known as the Iron Man of India, Patel’s leadership during the post-independence period was instrumental in uniting more than 560 princely states into one sovereign nation.

Historical Background and Significance

The celebration of National Unity Day was introduced in 2014, with the Government of India officially recognising Sardar Patel’s immense contribution to nation-building. The day reminds citizens of the importance of integrity, inclusivity, and togetherness in preserving India’s democratic fabric.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched the Ek Bharat Shreshtha Bharat initiative in 2015 to carry forward Patel’s vision fostering mutual understanding and cultural exchange among India’s diverse states and communities.

The Legacy of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel

As India’s first Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Home Affairs, Patel demonstrated exemplary administrative strength and diplomatic foresight. His pragmatic approach ensured the peaceful integration of territories that could have easily fragmented post-independence India.

The Statue of Unity, unveiled in 2018 on the banks of the Narmada River in Gujarat, stands as a towering tribute to his leadership. Rising 182 meters high, it is the world’s tallest statue and a symbol of India’s unbreakable unity.

Relevance of National Unity in Today’s India

In a time of diverse opinions and regional identities, Patel’s ideals remain profoundly relevant. National Unity Day reminds citizens of the shared responsibility to maintain peace, social harmony, and collective progress. From the education sector to governance, the message of unity continues to inspire policies that bridge regional divides and foster inclusive development.

Carrying Forward the Spirit of Ekta

Rashtriya Ekta Diwas is more than a commemoration it is a reaffirmation of India’s timeless values of togetherness and resilience. By remembering Sardar Patel’s vision, the nation strengthens its collective resolve to uphold unity amid diversity. Every citizen’s participation, from students to administrators, is a tribute to the enduring legacy of a leader who envisioned a nation that stands united in purpose and progress.
