Chandigarh Man Drives Into River in Moira After Following Google Maps Directions

A bizarre late-night incident in Moira, North Goa, unfolded when a Chandigarh resident, Amandeep Singh, drove his Maruti Gypsy straight into the river around 2 a.m. on Monday, reportedly after following Google Maps directions.

How the Incident Happened

According to police sources and local eyewitnesses, Singh, who recently shifted to the area, was trying to find his way back home using the navigation app. Unfamiliar with local routes and ferry ramps, he mistakenly drove down the Corjuem ferry ramp, believing it was a road leading across the river.

In his statement to authorities, Singh said, “Since I was new to the area, I was following Google Maps. I couldn’t tell the difference between the water and the road. Since I was looking at the map, the car went in and kept going. Luckily, the Gypsy had a soft top, and I could open the back and swim out.”

Locals’ Quick Response Prevented Major Tragedy

Nearby residents, alerted by the splash and engine noise, rushed to the spot and pulled the vehicle out with the help of ropes and a tractor. On inspection, several alcohol bottles were found inside the vehicle, with one beer bottle empty.

Police sources confirmed that a preliminary inquiry is underway to determine whether drunk driving was involved. Fortunately, Singh escaped unhurt.

Alcohol, GPS, and Late-Night Driving A Risky Mix

This incident has reignited conversations about road safety and responsible driving in Goa, especially among visitors and temporary residents unfamiliar with local geography. Locals say the ferry ramp is poorly lit and not adequately barricaded at night, making it risky for outsiders depending solely on navigation apps.

Traffic officials emphasize that while digital navigation aids are helpful, drivers must remain cautious and alert. “Technology is a guide, not a substitute for awareness,” said a senior police officer.

Safety and Awareness: The Way Forward

Authorities are now reviewing safety measures near ferry ramps in North Goa and may recommend improved lighting and signage to prevent similar incidents. Meanwhile, residents have urged new arrivals to exercise caution, particularly when driving late at night near coastal or riverine areas.

The Goa Police have also issued an advisory reminding motorists not to rely entirely on GPS during night drives and to avoid driving under the influence of alcohol.

While Amandeep Singh escaped with his life, the incident stands as a cautionary tale about the dangers of distracted and impaired driving. It also highlights the need for stronger local infrastructure, better nighttime visibility, and public awareness about responsible use of navigation technology.
