Mormugao Port to Restart Container Shipping Operations After Seven Years

Mormugao Port to Restart Container Shipping Operations After Seven Years
  • PublishedNovember 10, 2025

After nearly seven years without container movement, the Mormugao Port Authority (MPA) is preparing to re-enter the cargo business, marking a much-anticipated revival for Goa’s maritime sector. The last container shipment moved through the port in 2018, after which operations went dormant due to limited cargo volumes and logistical challenges. Now, with renewed commercial demand and improved terminal infrastructure, the port has scheduled the restart of services for late November 2025.

According to officials, the Shipping Corporation of India (SCI) has been selected as the feeder vessel operator for the revived service. SCI’s vessel, SCI Mumbai, is expected to make its maiden call at Mormugao Port on November 20, officially resuming container logistics through Goa’s primary seaport. The announcement has brought cautious optimism within trade circles and industry associations that have long sought a more efficient alternative to road transport.

A Turning Point for Goa’s Maritime Trade

The revival of container operations is expected to provide a major logistical advantage for exporters across Goa. For years, many businesses were forced to transport cargo to ports in neighbouring states such as Mumbai or Mangaluru, which increased transportation time and cost. With container handling available within the state once again, companies can now reduce freight expenses and improve delivery timelines.

“This milestone will significantly enhance Goa’s export and import potential while strengthening the region’s maritime connectivity,” said Vishnu Prasad, Senior Business Development Manager at Delta Ports (Mormugao Terminal Pvt Ltd), which operates the container terminal at MPA. He noted that regular container movement will improve cargo efficiency and reduce the burden on road infrastructure.

Industry Expectations and Economic Impact

Trade observers have welcomed the move as a step towards positioning Mormugao Port as a competitive coastal logistics hub. The renewed activity could support major sectors including mining equipment, pharmaceuticals, industrial goods, and food processing. With Goa’s manufacturing and MSME sectors expanding, a functioning container terminal is expected to boost supply chain efficiency and attract new export-oriented businesses.

Logistics experts say the revival will also help balance the state’s cargo load between bulk commodities and containerised goods. Since bulk cargo remains seasonal and volatile, regular container operations could provide stable revenue for the port while supporting long-term economic growth.

Improved Infrastructure Reinforces Confidence

The decision to resume services comes after significant improvements in terminal infrastructure, cargo-handling facilities, and coordination with shipping lines. Port authorities and operators have reportedly worked to ensure updated equipment, yard space, and digitised logistics systems to manage future cargo volumes.

With SCI being a central player in India’s maritime ecosystem, industry observers believe the choice of vessel operator will offer reliability and consistency. The restart also aligns with national plans to strengthen coastal shipping and reduce road congestion by shifting cargo movement towards waterways.

A Strategic Step for Goa’s Shipping Future

Goa’s trade community has often expressed concern that the absence of a functioning container terminal placed the state at a disadvantage. The upcoming resumption changes that narrative, providing an alternative that could encourage more industries to choose Goa as a shipping base.

Exports such as manufactured goods, food products, and pharmaceutical supplies are expected to benefit immediately. The revival could also attract new logistics players, freight forwarders, and warehousing facilities over time.
