South Goa to Get First Animal X-Ray and Sonography Diagnostic Facility

South Goa to Get First Animal X-Ray and Sonography Diagnostic Facility
  • PublishedNovember 6, 2025

The veterinary healthcare network in Goa is set for a major upgrade, as South Goa prepares to receive its first dedicated X-ray and sonography facility for animals. The announcement marks a significant development for farmers, livestock owners, and pet caretakers who have long faced delays due to limited diagnostic infrastructure in the district. Until now, many cases requiring scans had to be referred to North Goa or private centres, often resulting in high costs and delayed treatment.

A Long-Pending Gap in Veterinary Infrastructure

Veterinarians have frequently highlighted the need for advanced diagnostic equipment to improve treatment accuracy. The absence of an X-ray and sonography unit has made it difficult to detect fractures, internal injuries, infections, and reproductive complications in animals. The new centre will allow vets to diagnose and treat cases within the district, reducing travel and minimising stress on animals brought in emergencies.

Support for Farmers and Livestock Owners

The facility will directly support dairy farmers and livestock-dependent households. Faster diagnosis means quicker treatment and improved survival rates for cattle, buffaloes and goats, which play a crucial role in rural economy. With South Goa housing thousands of livestock, the new diagnostic unit is expected to reduce financial losses caused by undetected or delayed medical conditions.

Better Care for Pets and Stray Animals

The infrastructure will also enhance care for domestic pets and injured stray animals. Animal welfare groups and NGOs operating in South Goa have often struggled to transport injured animals for scans outside the district. With the new centre in place, both emergency treatment and routine medical evaluation will become faster and more accessible.

A Step Towards Modern Veterinary Services

Officials stated that the centre will be equipped with trained technicians and certified veterinary radiologists. Along with diagnostic services, the unit is expected to offer follow-up treatment, record-keeping and medical support to government veterinary clinics across the district. With technological upgrades gradually taking place in Goa’s animal health system, the new facility is seen as a step towards modern, data-supported veterinary care.

Authorities are expected to announce the operational timeline soon. The introduction of this service reflects growing recognition of animal health as an essential part of agricultural and public welfare policy. Once operational, the diagnostic unit is likely to serve thousands of cases annually, improving survival rates, reducing veterinary costs and strengthening animal welfare across South Goa.
