A potentially fatal accident was averted on the Sarmanas–Tonca ferry route, when a car lost control during disembarkation and slipped into the river. The incident occurred around 4.30 pm and involved multiple passengers on board, including two four-wheelers and six two-wheelers. Despite the severity of the situation, the response from ferry staff and commuters ensured the driver’s safety, preventing injury or loss of life.
Vehicle Slips into River After Driver Loses Control
The incident took place when the vehicle driver, Tipu Bharpet, was reversing his car to get off the ferry. A commuter walked behind the car, causing the driver to panic and apply sudden brakes. The car skidded backward, slid off the ferry edge, and plunged into the water.
While attempting to escape, the driver found his hand trapped inside the car door. As the vehicle continued sinking, the situation became critical.
Sailor Jumps into the River to Save the Driver
Nagesh Phadte, a sailor aboard the ferry “Dharbandora”, reacted immediately. He jumped into the river, swam to the car, and freed Bharpet’s trapped hand. Since the driver did not know how to swim, Phadte held on to him while another commuter threw a lifebuoy. Using the support, Phadte swam the driver to shallow waters.
Witnesses described the rescue as precise, calm, and timely, demonstrating proper safety awareness and quick thinking.
Authorities Commend the Response
Director of the River Navigation Department, Vikramsinh Rajebhosale, confirmed that the coordination between crew members and passengers prevented a fatal outcome. The crew followed safety procedures and managed the rescue within minutes.
The car was later retrieved, and an assessment of ferry safety procedures has been initiated to prevent future incidents.
Importance of Prepared Ferry Crew and Safety Measures
The incident highlights the importance of:
- Skilled ferry sailors
- Availability of life-saving equipment
- Emergency response training
- Passenger discipline during loading and unloading
River transport remains a critical link for many Goan communities. Safety protocols, frequent inspections, and trained ferry personnel continue to play a major role in preventing mishaps.
The quick action of ferry staff and passengers transformed a major accident into a safe rescue. No passengers were harmed, and normal service resumed shortly after. The Sarmanas rescue is being recognized as an example of successful emergency response and coordination on Goa’s ferry routes.
